Where is Aosta:
Aosta is
a town rich in traditions and historical
and cultural Roman and Medieval remains,
set in an alpine environment at the foot
of the highest tops in Europe.
Aosta (about 35.000 inhabitants) is the
most important town of Aosta Valley (a self-governing
region) and lies in a large basin surrounded
by the Mount Emilius (3559 metres), the
Viou (2856 metres) and the Nona summits
(3142 metres). The town is in the richest
area of the valley crossed by the Dora Baltea
river, where the Buthier torrent running
from Valpelline flows. Thanks to the pass
of the "Piccolo" and the "Grande
San Bernando", Aosta has always been
a very important strategic node even in
regard to transports (nowadays thanks also
to the Mont Blanc and "Grand San Bernardo"
tunnels).
The monuments:
Aosta keeps, from a topographic point of
view, a Roman town-planning: a rectangular
fence of walls (nearly all replaced in the
the Medieval Ages by towers and churches)
divided in "insulae" by perpendicular
streets looking like a chessboard.
The main monuments:
- Roman Arch of Augustus
- Praetorian Door
- Monumental "Sant' Orso" area
- Roman Theatre
- The Medieval Towers
- The Cathedral and the Roman Forum
- Chanoux square
- Museum of Saint-Benin
- Archaeological Museum
